What year was it? I'm not sure. One of those years when we didn't get out much. Zoning on YouTube in search of a catchy track, I came across Silicone Values, a collective from Bristol releasing a series of unstoppable singles. Well, almost, since there was no physical release. So I start a discussion with Brin, the singer and guitarist of this protean band, who seems keen on a vinyl release! So, here they are, on a single LP, the fifteen scathing tracks that got me so hooked.

I find in these tracks the essence of the UK punk DIY spirit of the 1978-1981 period, as heard for example in the "Messthetics" compilations, but also in artists such as Swell Maps, Steve Treatment, Alternative TV, TV Personalities or more recently Suburban Homes or Hygiene. The urgency is there, the recording is made with the means at hand, the sound is dry, the lyrics hit the nail on the head. The use of a drum machine is not forbidden, giving certain tracks an air of Metal Urbain. "How to survive when people don't like you and you don't like them" is a series of captivating tracks that sound like an essential return to basics.

Quelle année était-ce? Je ne sais plus trop. Une de celles où on n'est pas trop sorti. Zonant le tube à la recherche d'un morceau qui accroche, je tombe sur Silicone Values, un collectif de Bristol qui sort coup sur coup une série de singles imparables. Enfin presque puisqu'aucun disque ne permet d'écouter les morceaux en question, il n'y a pas de sortie physique. J'entame alors une discussion avec Brin, le chanteur et guitariste de ce groupe protéiforme qui semble enclin à une sortie en vinyle! Voici donc, rassemblés sur un même LP, les quinze morceaux cinglants qui m'ont tant accroché.

Je trouve qu'il y a dans ces morceaux l'essentiel de l'esprit UK punk DIY période 1978-1981, comme on peut l'entendre par exemple dans les compilations "Messthetics" mais aussi chez des artistes comme Swell Maps, Steve Treatment, Alternative TV, TV Personalities ou plus récemment Suburban Homes ou Hygiene. L'urgence est là, l'enregistrement est fait avec les moyens du bord, le son est sec, les textes font mouche. Ils ne se sont pas interdits l'usage d'une boîte à rythme ce qui donne à certains morceaux des airs de Metal Urbain. Ce "How to survive when people don't like you and you don't like them" est un enchaînement de titres captivants qui sonnent comme un indispensable retour à l'essentiel.
